Former NHIS Boss Usman Yusuf Remanded In Kuje Prison

A former executive secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme, Usman Yusuf has been remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre in the Federal Capital Territory.

Yusuf was remanded following an order by Justice Chinyere Nwecheonwu of an FCT High Court on Monday, February 3, 2025.

The former NHIS boss is currently facing allegations of fraud and abuse of office levelled against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Yusuf who has been quite critical of the present administration is facing a five-count amended charge bordering on fraudulent activities orchestrated during his time as the ES of the NHIS.

In his ruling following the arraignment of the defendant, Justice Nwecheonwu ordered the transfer of Yusuf from the EFCC custody to the Nigerian Correctional Service.

Prior to the court’s ruling, the former NHIS boss had pleaded not guilty to the charges levelled against him.

Following the judge’s decision, Yusuf’s counsel O.I. Habeeb prayed the court to to allow his client be remanded in the EFCC’s custody pending the hearing of the bail application.

Justice Nwecheonwu, however, declined the request and ordered his remand in Kuje.

The judge further adjourned hearing on the matter to February 12, 2025.
