The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced its decision to move its corporate headquarters from Abuja to Lagos as part of cost-cutting measures. The move is aimed at preventing the misuse of public resources and safeguarding the public purse, as directed by the Minister of Aviation, Festus Kayamo.
FAAN’s spokesperson, Obiageli Orah, conveyed this information in a statement, explaining that the decision was made in consultation with FAAN management, stakeholders, and unions. The relocation is deemed to be in the best interest of the authority and the country at this time.
According to FAAN, individuals affected by the initial decision to move the headquarters to Abuja have returned to Lagos due to the lack of office space in Abuja. The statement criticized the initial move, highlighting that it was imprudent to relocate to Abuja when there were no suitable FAAN buildings in the city to accommodate everyone simultaneously.
FAAN stated, “Having returned to Lagos, the Authority will be liable to pay them DTA because technically they are working out of station as their official posting is to Abuja.”
Highlighting that over 60% of FAAN’s activities are concentrated in Lagos due to the high passenger volume at Lagos airports, the statement revealed the Minister’s plans to engage concessionaires for the construction of suitable offices in both Lagos and Abuja.
Until new facilities are built, FAAN will continue managing its existing building in Lagos, which can currently accommodate all directors and senior officials. The agency clarified that operations in Abuja remain unaffected, with no downsizing of activities.
FAAN assured that Abuja would maintain full operational offices, and a final decision regarding the permanent headquarters location would be made once fitting corporate buildings are constructed in both Lagos and Abuja in the near future.
