Olumide Akpata, a former president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has declared his intention to contest the Edo 2024 governorship election on the platform of the Labour Party (LP).
Bellnews reports that Akpata, who made the declaration at the party’s secretariat in Benin City on Thursday, said he was motivated by his passion for the people of Edo State and his desire to make a difference in their lives.
He said the LP was the only party truly committed to the well-being of the ordinary people and that he was confident that he could lead the party to victory in the election.
“My interest is for the people of Edo State. And what I find out in politics and governance in Nigeria today is that the people have been taken out of the equation. Nobody cares about the people.
“So, when I look around, the only party I find to be people-oriented and interested in the lots of our people is Labour Party.
“So I have come here to express my interest and to carry the people along,” he said.
The state chairman of the LP, Kelly Ogbaloi, welcomed Akpata to the party and said the party’s working committee had endorsed his aspiration. He promised a level playing field for all aspirants in the party’s primary election.
The Edo State governorship election is scheduled for September 21, 2024.
