The issue of reopening Nigeria’s borders has been under scrutiny amidst concerns over hunger and economic implications. The Customs Boss, in an interaction session with members of the Kongolam border community in Mai’adua Local Government Area of Katsina State, shed light on ongoing consultations regarding this matter.
Responding to the clamor for border reopening, the Customs Boss highlighted that only President Bola Tinubu holds the authority to make such decisions. Emphasizing the government’s commitment to fostering economic prosperity, he mentioned the focus on eliminating barriers to free trade.
He assured that efforts have been made to streamline operations, including reducing the number of checkpoints and enhancing collaboration between Service personnel and traders. Stressing the importance of consultations, he mentioned that a decision would be made following thorough deliberations.
Acknowledging the concerns of border communities, particularly regarding checkpoints and border closure, he affirmed that operations are conducted within the ambit of the law and with delegated powers. He noted that the President has been informed of these concerns and has directed the release of confiscated food items for sale exclusively in Nigerian markets.
The Customs Boss underscored collaboration with the Police and other agencies to address challenges hindering free trade at the borders. He reiterated the importance of ensuring that locally produced food remains within the country, especially during the current period of food scarcity.
Highlighting the collective responsibility to enforce laws prohibiting food exportation during this critical period, he urged collaboration to support government efforts in addressing food insufficiency.
