The escalating cost of clearing goods in Nigerian ports has become a significant threat to licensed customs agents, prompting them to seek alternative sources of income. The challenges in the maritime sector, including high clearing costs due to exchange rate fluctuations, have left many customs agents uncertain about their livelihoods. Some have transitioned into other industries, facing unemployment, relocation, or even loss of life due to the adverse effects of the volatile exchange rate.

Recent reports indicate that 60% of licensed customs agents have abandoned the profession, venturing into occupations like commercial motorcycling (okada riding) and other menial jobs. The instability in the exchange rate has been a primary factor influencing their decisions.

While acknowledging that the administration of Godwin Emefiele at the Central Bank of Nigeria impacted the maritime sector, industry experts argue that the current challenges surpass those faced during Emefiele’s tenure. Licensed customs agents have expressed dissatisfaction with the floating exchange rate, prompting a shift to alternative employment opportunities.

Some practitioners have explored different avenues to stay afloat, including ship chandelling, a sector with significant potential that remains largely untapped in Nigeria. Additionally, a focus on exportation, rather than exclusive emphasis on importation, presents an opportunity for forex generation and addresses forex scarcity.

Licensed agents can also consider trucking consultancy, facilitating truck services for agents in need of cargo transport. This consultancy model allows agents to secure daily earnings even without truck ownership. Car delivery services and assistance in car purchases have emerged as clean businesses for licensed agents, leveraging their expertise in the clearing business.

One licensed agent shared his experience with truck consulting, emphasizing that while the gains may not match the traditional clearing business, it provides a consistent income stream without substantial expenses.

In response to the changing landscape, licensed customs agents are diversifying into these alternative sectors, providing them with income and contributing to revenue generation for the government. This shift highlights the resilience and adaptability of these professionals amid challenging circumstances in the maritime sector.
