China has announced a 34% tariff on all goods imported from the United States in retaliation for a similar move by U.S. President Donald Trump.

In a statement published on its Customs website and seen by Bellnews, China stated that the U.S. action violates international trade norms.

The statement said, “On April 2, 2025, the US government announced the imposition of ‘reciprocal tariffs’ on Chinese goods exported to the US. This practice of the US is not in line with international trade rules, seriously undermines China’s legitimate rights and interests, and is a typical unilateral bullying practice.

“In accordance with the Tariff Law of the People’s Republic of China, the Customs Law of the People’s Republic of China, the Foreign Trade Law of the People’s Republic of China and other laws and regulations and the basic principles of international law, and with the approval of the State Council, additional tariffs will be imposed on imported goods originating from the United States from 12:01 on April 10, 2025.”

Further outlining the details, the statement added: “A 34% tariff will be imposed on all imported goods originating from the United States on the basis of the current applicable tariff rate.

“The current bonded, tax reduction and exemption policies remain unchanged, and the additional tariffs will not be reduced or exempted.

“If the goods have been shipped from the place of departure before 12:01 on April 10, 2025, and are imported between 12:01 on April 10, 2025 and 24:00 on May 13, 2025, the additional tariffs prescribed in this announcement will not be levied.”

According to CNN, as part of the retaliatory measures announced Friday, China also added 11 American companies to its “unreliable entity list,” including drone manufacturers.

In addition, it imposed export controls on 16 American companies, prohibiting the export of Chinese dual-use items.

China’s Ministry of Commerce also announced anti-dumping investigations into imported medical CT X-ray tubes from both the United States and India.

Additionally, Beijing unveiled new export controls on seven types of rare-earth minerals, including samarium, gadolinium, and terbium, that are exported to the U.S.

Trump had previously imposed two tranches of 10% additional duties on all Chinese imports—measures the White House claimed were necessary to curb the flow of illicit fentanyl into the U.S. That move effectively raised tariffs on Chinese goods entering the U.S. to 54%.

On Wednesday, Trump announced an additional 34% tariff on all Chinese goods imported into the U.S.—a move expected to drastically escalate tensions and reshape trade relations between the world’s two largest economies.

Trade tensions peaked that same day, which the Trump administration dubbed “Liberty Day,” as the U.S. imposed tariffs on multiple countries worldwide.
