On Saturday, the last official football fixture in European club football will be played.
Inter Milan will take on Paris Saint-Germain in the final of the Champions League.
It would be PSG’s second-ever Champions League final appearance after their 2020 defeat to Bayern Munich.
For Inter, they are seeking their fourth title, having last lifted the trophy under Jose Mourinho in 2010.
No doubt, both teams have easily been the best in the competition.
PSG have produced one of the most remarkable revivals within a Champions League campaign.
The Ligue 1 champions did not finish in the top eight and needed playoffs to progress.
But as it stands, Luis Enrique’s men could become the 24th side to win the European Cup and a new name on the trophy for the second time in three seasons, after Manchester City beat Inter in 2023.
The Nerazurri will not like thunder to strike twice.
Inter were fourth in this season’s league phase (W6 D1 L1) before beating Feyenoord (2-0 a, 2-1 h), Bayern Munich (2-1 a, 2-2 h) and Barcelona (3-3 a, 4-3 h aet) in the knockout stage.
“Inter Milan’s campaign can be seen as successful,” Ola Olukole, a Senior Technical Specialist and an Inter Milan fan, tells Bellnews.
“It’s been a mix of consistency and contentment in the way they play.
“They’ve won most of their games but not always with big margins, almost enough to get through. Their reliance on their defensive football has really paid off against the best of Europe.
“Inzaghi’s 3-5-2 system continues to function so well.”
Inter’s Champions League campaign has been built on a solid defensive foundation.
But their 7-6 aggregate victory against Barcelona was the joint-highest scoring Champions League knockout tie.
“We’ve been solid from the first game against Red Star Belgrade with an emphatic 4-0 win,” Olukole pointed out.
“It’s like we learnt a lot of lessons from getting to the finals the last time against Man City.
“The 3-3 at Olimpic Lluis got me worried when Barca came back from being 2-0 down before half time. But we managed that and came out victorious from the tie.”
For Inzaghi, whose future at the San Siro is uncertain, this is it.
His team are set to finish the campaign without silverware if they find a way past PSG.
Olukole adds: “Tomorrow is our last chance after losing the Copa Italia match to Milan. On the last day, we lost the Scudetto to Napoli.
“I think we deserve this silverware for all the efforts we put into this competition being consistent from group stages.”
