The tragic incident occurred on February 10, 2023, as the duo were walking with a friend outside a well-known Durban restaurant, mere hours before AKA was scheduled to perform at a nearby club. AKA, who initially rose to prominence as part of the rap group ‘Entity’ before embarking on a successful solo career, had garnered numerous accolades both in South Africa and internationally. His untimely demise sent shockwaves through the global music community. According to police statements, the suspects will face court proceedings scheduled for Thursday. KwaZulu-Natal provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, revealed that surveillance indicated AKA had been tracked from the airport, suggesting premeditation in the attack. He also noted that Tibz was not the intended target, further underscoring the calculated nature of the crime. South Africa’s Police Minister, Bheki Cele, expressed relief at the arrests, acknowledging the profound impact the murders had on the nation. The incident, captured by Closed-Circuit Television cameras, rattled many residents in a country grappling with staggering murder rates. South Africa has long struggled with high levels of violent crime, with numerous entertainment figures falling victim to such incidents. The tragic death of reggae singer Lucky Dube in 2007 remains etched in memory, serving as a stark reminder of the country’s ongoing security challenges. Recent police statistics underscore the severity of the situation, with nearly 84 murders reported daily between October and December.
