President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has reaffirmed the National Assembly’s support for the creation of Anioma State, saying the initiative enjoys strong legislative backing.
Akpabio made the declaration while addressing party members at the South-South Zonal Congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held in Asaba, Delta State.
The Senate President said the administration of President Bola Tinubu remains committed to the initiative, adding that the proposal has continued to receive attention from the 10th Senate.
According to him, the creation of Anioma State would lead to improved governance, balanced development and administrative efficiency in the region.
Akpabio explained that if the proposal succeeds, Warri would serve as the capital of the restructured Delta State, while Asaba would become the capital of the new Anioma State.
He noted that Warri already possesses key infrastructure that makes it suitable for such a role.
According to him, the city has an airport, government establishments, major oil companies, a seaport and a stadium.
“Anioma State will be created, with Asaba as its capital. The Senate fully supports the initiative spearheaded by Senator Ned Nwoko,” Akpabio said.
“This step will usher in a new era of development and shared prosperity for all constituent communities. With Asaba as Anioma State capital, Warri will be the capital of the new Delta.”
The congress attracted several prominent political leaders from across the region.
Among those present were the governors of Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Rivers and Cross River states, alongside other party stakeholders and leaders from the South-South zone.
Akpabio described the agitation for the creation of Anioma State as historically justified, saying it reflects a long-standing aspiration of the people.
He said the proposal is anchored on principles of equity, decentralisation and balanced development.
The Senate President also acknowledged the role of Senator Ned Nwoko, who represents Delta North Senatorial District, in championing the initiative.
In November 2025, Nwoko disclosed that the campaign for the creation of Anioma State had gained significant momentum within the National Assembly.
He said 97 senators had already signed a document endorsing the proposal, describing the level of support as unprecedented.
According to him, constitutional amendment committees are already reviewing the proposal as part of broader reforms.
