Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has expressed his commendation for the Super Eagles of Nigeria for their exceptional performance and securing the runner-up position at the recently concluded African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023. Otti lauded the team for their remarkable display, which not only showcased their best efforts but also contributed to enhancing Nigeria’s reputation as a dominant force in African football.

Despite facing tough opposition, particularly in the final match against host country, Cote d’Ivoire, where they narrowly lost 2-1 at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan, Otti emphasized the resilience and dedication exhibited by the Nigerian players.

In a statement issued on Monday by his Chief Press Secretary, Kazie Uko, Governor Otti extended his heartfelt congratulations to Samuel Chukwueze, Kenneth Omeruo, and Frank Ogochukwu Onyeka, three proud representatives of Abia State who contributed significantly to the Super Eagles’ campaign in AFCON 2023.

Governor Otti highlighted Chukwueze’s pivotal role in setting up the team captain, Troost Ekong, for a crucial header that momentarily put Nigeria in the lead during the intense final match.

Acknowledging the unwavering support from Nigerians throughout the tournament, Otti also commended the technical crew and the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) for their dedication and efforts, which played a pivotal role in propelling Nigeria to the AFCON finals.

The Super Eagles showcased their prowess by triumphing over formidable opponents, including the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in the round of 16, the Antelopes of Angola in the quarter-finals, and the Bafana Bafana of South Africa in the semi-finals, before narrowly missing out on the championship title to the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire in the final showdown.
