As the campaign for the forthcoming general election will officially begin this weekend, the presidential candidate of the People Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar has made a crucial visit to the Southeast region of the country.
According to a report on The Nation Newspaper, Atiku disclosed that Igbos can only become president after his tenure as the next president of the country must have ended.
The former Vice President of the country made this known while he was addressing stakeholders and other members of his party, during a visit to Enugu State on Tuesday.
Atiku Abubakar in his address promised to prioritize developmental projects in the Southeast region of the country and other regions if he is elected as president. He added that any project in the Southeast is a favour to the country.
He spoke about his relationship with the Igbos and how he has projected two Igbos as his running mate during previous attempts to emerge as the president of Nigeria.
The presidential candidate of the PDP also took a shot at the ruling APC party, for segregating some parts of the country with the paucity of projects. The statement made by Atiku reads, “I am the stepping stone for Igbos becoming President in Nigeria. I have had a close relationship with Igbos and this influenced my choices of Senator Ben Obi and Peter Obi as my running mates in my two previous outings as a presidential candidate.
“Again, I have chosen another great Igbo here (Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa) for the third time as my running mate. I have three Igbo children and I am saying this for the very first time in public. So, my relationship with Ndigbo did not start today.
The second Niger bridge in Onitsha is not a favour to the Southeast, rather it is or should be seen as a favour to Nigeria. This is because it is not only the people of the Southeast that use the bridge.”
The former Vice President further spoke about the Sit-At-Home being observed in the region. He said it has dealt a big blow to the economy of the region and also to the economy of the country.
He called on the elders in the region to speak against the Sit-At-Home order in the region. Atiku promised his administration will decisively deal with insecurity, economic crisis, and other challenges confronting the country.
