The Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) has been instructed to immediately halt its current strike, but the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has refused this order.

ASUU had been directed by the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN) in Abuja to immediately halt the current strike.

Recall that ASUU has been on strike since February 14th and all negotiations with the federal government so far were unfruitful.

On Wednesday, Justice Polycarp Hamman ruled that the strike violated Section 18(1)(2) of the Trade Disputes Act, which forbids such activity and the court also emphasized that students have right to education.

In response, Giwa Yisa Temitope, the National Public Relations Officer of NANS, called the decision a “black market judgment.”

Temitope said that the decision compromised equity since it was improper for the Federal Government to bring the academic union before the court from the beginning.
