Residents of Isapa community in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State were thrown into panic on Sunday evening after suspected bandits reportedly invaded the area, firing sporadically before local hunters confronted and repelled them.
Sources in the community told Bellnews that the attack occurred around 7:00 p.m. on Sunday when the armed men stormed the community.
A local source told Bellnews that the suspected bandits attempted to carry out a kidnapping operation but were resisted by hunters in the community.
“They invaded Isapa on Sunday night, but we thank God they were unable to kidnap or kill anyone,” the source told SaharaReporters. “The hunters in the community quickly mobilised and confronted the bandits.”
The source added that the attackers fired several gunshots during the confrontation, creating tension and fear among residents.
“The bandits were shooting sporadically for some minutes when they entered the community,” the source said. “But the hunters also responded and stood their ground, which forced the bandits to retreat.”
Residents reportedly remained indoors throughout the night as the sound of gunfire echoed across parts of the community.
Despite the attack, no casualty or abduction was recorded as of the time of filing this report, which residents attributed to the swift response of the local hunters who confronted the gunmen.
Communities across parts of Kwara State have in recent months raised concerns about increasing security threats, including the infiltration of suspected bandits believed to be operating from forest areas bordering neighbouring states.
Local residents have repeatedly called on security agencies and the government to strengthen security presence in rural communities to prevent further attacks and possible kidnappings.
