The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has announced the successful completion of the Awodi-07 appraisal and exploration well by Chevron Nigeria Limited, operator of the NNPC Ltd/CNL Joint Venture.

The company disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday by its spokesperson, Andy Odeh.

According to the statement, the Awodi-07 well is located in the shallow offshore area of the western Niger Delta and was drilled as part of the joint venture’s ongoing efforts to further delineate and unlock hydrocarbon potential within its asset portfolio.

“Drilling operations commenced in late November 2025 and were concluded in mid-December 2025, with all activities executed safely, efficiently, and in strict compliance with approved operational and regulatory standards,” the NNPC said.

It added that following extensive testing, logging and data acquisition, the well was safely secured, marking the successful completion of the programme.

The national oil company said results from the Awodi-07 well were highly encouraging, confirming a substantial presence of hydrocarbons across multiple reservoir zones.

“This outcome represents a notable milestone for the NNPC Ltd/CNL Joint Venture, strengthening confidence in the underlying asset and reinforcing the prospectivity of the area,” the statement said.

According to NNPC, the success of the well underscores the effectiveness of disciplined exploration, sound technical evaluation and strong operational collaboration between the partners.

NNPC explained that it operates several oil and gas fields in the Niger Delta through a joint venture arrangement with Chevron Nigeria Limited.

Under the agreement, Chevron holds a 40 per cent interest, while NNPC Limited owns the remaining share, allowing both companies to pool resources, expertise and investments.

The company said the collaboration aims to increase oil production to about 146,000 barrels per day, boosting government revenue, creating jobs and supporting national energy supply.

Reacting to the development, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Limited, Bayo Ojulari, commended Chevron Nigeria Limited for its operational excellence and technical competence.

“The success of the Awodi-07 well further reinforces the strength of the NNPC Ltd/CNL Joint Venture and our shared commitment to responsibly growing Nigeria’s hydrocarbon reserves,” Ojulari said.

He added that the achievement aligns with the company’s strategic priorities of increasing production, enhancing national energy security and delivering sustainable value to Nigerians.

Also speaking, the Executive Vice-President, Upstream, NNPC Limited, Udy Ntia, described the Awodi-07 results as proof of the value of sustained collaboration and technical rigour.

“This discovery underscores the importance of disciplined exploration programmes, strong partnerships and the positive impact of the reforms introduced under the Petroleum Industry Act,” Ntia said.

He added that NNPC looked forward to working closely with Chevron Nigeria Limited to advance the discovery toward timely development and monetisation.
