The national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has announced that the Kwankwasiyya movement will henceforth designate January 23 as “World Betrayal Day.”
Bellnews reports that Kwankwaso made the declaration on Saturday while addressing supporters at his residence in Kano, in the wake of the planned defection of Governor Abba Yusuf to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking in Hausa, Kwankwaso said the idea of marking the date came from social media discussions about betrayal, and that he had decided to formally adopt it as a day of commemoration for those he described as having betrayed the Kwankwasiyya cause.
He said, “I saw multiple talks regarding betrayal and many more on social media.
“But there was one post by someone who said there’s a need to declare 23rd January as World Betrayal Day. Because of that as a leader of this movement, I am now in support of the 23rd of January as a Betrayal Day. We will now be celebrating that day everywhere.”

On Friday, January 23, Governor Abba Yusuf formally resigned his membership from the NNPP, the party under which he was elected governor in 2023.
Yusuf exited the party along with 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and all 44 local government chairmen in the state.
In his resignation announcement, the governor cited deepening internal crises and prolonged leadership disputes within the party as key reasons for his departure.
