The Nasarawa State Police Command has imposed a total ban on the burning of used tyres during crossover night activities ahead of the New Year celebrations, warning that offenders will be arrested and prosecuted.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, issued the directive as part of measures to maintain public order, protect lives and property, and prevent environmental degradation during the festive period.

Speaking on the development, the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, SP Ramhan Nansel, said the ban became necessary due to the recurring damage tyre burning causes to public and private infrastructure, as well as the safety risks it poses to residents.

“The ban is aimed at protecting critical government and private infrastructure from destruction, preventing environmental pollution, and ensuring the free flow of traffic and general public safety during the New Year celebrations,” Nansel said.

He disclosed that all Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers across the state have been placed on high alert and directed to enforce the order strictly within their areas of responsibility.

“Any individual found enaging in the burning of tyres will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law,” he warned.

The police spokesperson added that CP Mohammed has also cautioned vulcanizers to properly dispose of used tyres at the close of business each day to prevent them from falling into the wrong hands.

In addition, parents and guardians were urged to caution their children and wards against participating in tyre burning or any related unlawful acts during the festivities.

He reiterated that the Nasarawa State Police Command assured residents of its readiness to ensure a peaceful, safe, and hitch-free New Year celebration, calling on members of the public to support security agencies by complying with the directive and promptly reporting any violations.
