Former Ondo State governor, Olusegun Mimiko, has dismissed claims that he has been appointed to lead the Southwest consultation team for ex-President, Goodluck Jonathan ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The report, published by a national daily (not Naija News), alleged that Mimiko was selected on the recommendation of ex-Osun State governor and ADC National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola.
But in a statement on Monday, Mimiko’s spokesperson, Eniola Akinsola, described the publication as false and mischievous.
He said, “The falsehood in the report is obvious from the get-go. It is just the work of a journalist flying with concocted rumour dressed as news.”
Akinsola stressed that while Mimiko holds Jonathan in high regard, he has not been contacted for any political campaign.
The statement noted, “The Mimiko that I know respects former President Jonathan but has neither been reached nor appointed for a campaign that is still the subject, and may well end as a subject of fanciful speculation. I am sure he is also not job-hunting.”
The aide further noted that as 2027 draws closer, politically motivated stories of this nature are bound to emerge, particularly about politicians like Mimiko who have “chosen to remain low for now.”
Jonathan’s Rumoured Comeback
Speculation about Jonathan’s possible return has been rife since PDP chieftain and former Minister of Information, Professor Jerry Gana, declared that Jonathan would contest in 2027.
“I can confirm that Goodluck Ebele Jonathan will contest the presidential election in 2027 as PDP candidate, and we should be prepared to vote for him to return as president again,” Gana said on Monday, September 29, 2025.
However, presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, dismissed the claim as “an absurdity.”
“We should caution former president Jonathan to be wary of PDP sugar-coated cheerleaders. Politicians of Jerry Gana’s ilk merely want to lure him into the race to satisfy their personal, political, religious, and ethnic interests. They will abandon him midstream, as they did in 2015,” Onanuga warned.
