A former Niger Delta militant leader, Asari Dokubo, has weighed in on the issue surrounding Bola Tinubu’s choice of running mate.
The APC presidential candidate’s decision to pick a fellow Muslim, Kashim Shettima as his running mate has attracted criticism from some Christian groups including the Christian Association of Nigeria
Dokubo, in a live video on Facebook, has questioned why the Christians who didn’t see anything wrong when Christian presidential candidates picked their fellow Christians as running mates have always kicked against a Muslim-Muslim ticket
He said the Christians were the ones who started the same faith ticket long ago.
He explained that during the 1979 presidential election, Obafemi Awolowo the flag-bearer of UPN picked a fellow Christian, Philip Umeadi as his running mate while Nnamdi Azikiwe the flag-bearer of NPP picked Ishaya Audu, a Christian from the north as his running mate.
According to Dokubu, the Christians didn’t see anything wrong when Awolowo and Azikiwe the two most celebrated political elite presented same-faith presidential tickets, however, they opposed Moshood Abiola when he picked a Muslim, Baba Gana Kingibe as his running in the 1993 presidential election.
