A former governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose has said his wife cautioned him against speaking ill of the late former president of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari.
Fayose while speaking in an interview with Channels Television said his wife advised him never to abuse the late Buhari after his passing.
The former governor has been a constant critic of the former president, especially when Buhari was in power between 2015 and 2023.
Buhari died in London on July 13, after a brief illness at the age of 82.
He was buried in his private residence in Daura, Katsina State on July 15.
During his interview, Fayose said he refrained from speaking ill of the late Buhari following his wife’s advice.
According to him, Nigeriians are used to praising people when they die, rather than speaking the truth at the time.
“The people in Nigeria only praise the dead. When Buhari died, I wanted to come out and abuse him [but] my wife called me not to say so.
“Would you say Buhari performed? I am not among those praising the dead. Don’t honour me when I die. When I die, I’m gone.
“When Buhari was in government, we all knew what this country was. So, nobody should come and tell me that Tinubu is not doing well. He is accessible. Was the former president accessible?” Fayose queried.
He also noted that while no one is perfect, several things went wrong during the late president’s administration.
“Nigeria is a sick country; it will take heaven to pull it out at once. What miracle can anybody do in two years? The situation is critical, wide and deep. Tinubu inherited a very bad economy,” Fayose added.
