Former Senate President, David Mark, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the emerging 2027 opposition coalition seeking to unseat President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Mark, who is expected to lead the coalition platform as National Chairman, made the announcement in a resignation letter dated June 27, 2025, addressed to the PDP leadership in Otukpo Ward 1, Benue State.
“I have resolved to join the National Coalition of Political Opposition Movement in Nigeria, as part of the collective effort to rescue our nation and preserve our hard-earned democracy,” Mark stated.
Reflecting on his decades-long loyalty to the PDP, the former Senate President recalled his commitment even during the party’s most difficult periods.
“You may recall that over the years, I have remained firm and deeply committed to the ideals of the PDP. Even when nearly all stakeholders departed the party following our loss in the 2015 presidential election, I pledged to remain the last man standing,” Mark wrote.
“I have worked steadfastly to rebuild, reconcile, and reposition the party, efforts which without sounding immodest helped restore the PDP to national relevance and made it once again a party of choice for many Nigerians.”
However, Mark said the party’s persistent internal crisis had left him with no option but to move on.
“Recent events marked by deepening divisions, persistent leadership crisis, and irreconcilable differences have reduced the party to a shadow of its former self, subjecting it to public ridicule,” he stated.
Recall that Mark, alongside former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and other top PDP leaders, endorsed the new opposition coalition platform during a strategy meeting held on Tuesday at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja.
At the meeting, PDP leaders resolved to support the coalition fully and encouraged all party members to collapse their political structures into the new alliance.
“The meeting encourages all well-meaning PDP members and other patriotic Nigerians to join the coalition,” a communique issued after the session stated.
The new coalition will operate under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), with a formal unveiling scheduled for today, Wednesday, July 2, 2025.
Attendees at the Abuja meeting included Atiku Abubakar, David Mark, former Cross River Governor Liyel Imoke, former Sokoto Governor Aminu Tambuwal, former Jigawa Governor Sule Lamido, former Ebonyi Governor Sam Egwu, and former PDP National Chairman Uche Secondus.
Also playing key roles in the coalition talks are political heavyweights outside the PDP fold, such as former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi.
