No fewer than 22 persons were feared dead on Friday after the boat they were travelling in capsized some metres away from the jetty they took off.
According to a source, the boat with 21 passengers and a driver took off from the wooden jetty at Mazamaza but the boat got overwhelmed by the water wave leading to the boat capsizing just by the Lagferry jetty in Mile 2.
It was learnt that some efforts were put into rescuing the victims but did not yield any fruit.
The real cause of the incident was not yet known as many in the know were not willing to comment on what led to the accident.
A woman who had three children on board the boat was seen crying profusely and was being consoled by friends and family around Mazamaza bus stop.
The Mazamaza jetty is a take-off point for many heading towards the riverine communities in Apapa, Amuwo-odofin and Ojo. It is also the take-off point for those heading to CMS on the Island and Apapa port.
It was further gathered that passengers heading to Benin Republic use the jetty too to board boats to their destination.
