Pope Francis, the leader of the Catholic Church, continues to grapple with respiratory and mobility issues, as evident during his recent appearance where he faced difficulty climbing a few steps.
During the weekly general audience in St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican on Wednesday, March 6, the 87-year-old pontiff reportedly encountered challenges attempting to ascend the steps to board his car. Despite grasping onto handrails, he found it difficult and ultimately resorted to sitting back down in his wheelchair. He then greeted the crowd before being wheeled away.
These lingering respiratory and mobility problems have persisted, with the Pope once again delegating an aide to read his remarks during the audience. He also faced difficulty boarding his popemobile at the event’s conclusion.
These challenges are not new for Pope Francis, who has been coping with a fracture in the knee and inflammation of its ligaments since 2022, leading him to use a wheelchair on occasions. Despite these difficulties, he has typically relied on a cane or walker with assistance from aides.
Last week, the Pope underwent unspecified diagnostic tests at the hospital, the results of which remain undisclosed. Throughout the winter, he has been battling recurrent colds, bronchitis, and flu symptoms.
This isn’t the first time the Pope has faced health setbacks. In 2023, he canceled a trip to the Gulf due to acute infectious bronchitis. Additionally, he has a history of respiratory issues, having had part of one lung removed in his youth due to an infection.
Despite these challenges, Pope Francis has remained committed to his duties, albeit with occasional modifications to accommodate his health needs.
