In a demonstration of discontent, inmates at Jos Prison raised their voices against purported plans by prison authorities to diminish their daily meal portions, citing soaring prices of food supplies in the market.
Reported by The PUNCH, the inmates expressed dissatisfaction with the proposed reduction in their food allowances, highlighting concerns over the adequacy of their sustenance.
Raphael Ibinuhi, the Comptroller of the Jos Correctional Centre, acknowledged the situation, attributing the decision to shrink food rations to the prevailing high cost of living across the nation.
Explaining further, Ibinuhi stated, “The issue stems from the exorbitant cost of goods in the market. The contracted food supplier mentioned that they are compelled to decrease the serving size due to escalating prices of food items.”
He added, “Therefore, the protest was triggered by the reduction in food portions. While I don’t deem the protest necessary, considering the nationwide challenge of food scarcity and inflated prices, I am confident that steps taken by the Federal Government to address this issue will have a ripple effect, including within correctional facilities.”
The protest underscores broader economic struggles felt across the country, with hopes pinned on governmental interventions to alleviate the situation.
