Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Ilorin Zonal Command have apprehended 48 students of Kwara State University (KWASU) and two Malete residents in Moro Local Government Area on charges related to Internet fraud, commonly known as “yahoo-yahoo.”
According to a statement by the agency’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, the arrests were made following credible intelligence regarding the proliferation of cybercrime activities, particularly on campuses, in Kwara State.
The EFCC operatives, in a concerted effort to combat corruption and illicit online activities, conducted discreet investigations and subsequently apprehended the suspects in various locations after days of surveillance on Wednesday, February 21, 2024.
Among those arrested are individuals identified as Idris Yekini, Ayantola Segun, Adeshina Taheeb, Mustapha Alamin, Usman Harun, Oladimeji Oseni, Qudus Temitope, Adewunmi Israel, Lukman Uthman, Alamin Ibitoye, Usman Sadiq, Musbau Waris, Ibrahim Oluwatosin, Oladele Israel, Rafiu Ashimu, and several others.
The statement further lists the recovery of nine exotic cars, 24 laptops, and various brands of mobile phones from the suspects. Oyewale noted that the suspects would be arraigned in court upon the completion of ongoing investigations.
