The Lagos State Fire Service has attributed the fire incident at the Household of David church to overheating in the auditorium ceiling, leading to its collapse and subsequent ignition.
Amodu Shakiri, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Fire Service, disclosed that the incident occurred at the church on Surulere Street, Adeniyi Jones, in the Ikeja Local Government Area of Lagos State. The fire caused substantial damage to the multi-million naira church auditorium.
The fire broke out around 10:00 am on Wednesday, as reported by The PUNCH. Shakiri explained that the ceiling, overheating, eventually collapsed, sparking the fierce blaze. The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, along with Alausa and Ikeja Fire Stations, LASAMBUS, LASEMA, and Red Cross, were promptly on the scene to address the situation.
Shakiri clarified that efforts were made to contain the fire within the church’s auditorium, preventing further damage to nearby properties. The affected church items included furnishings and the auditorium itself.
Senior Pastor Olusola Osunmakinde expressed his sentiments on Instagram, acknowledging the painful experience. In a video, he shared that despite the destruction of church items such as air conditioners, chairs, and equipment, the incident was a trying moment. He also mentioned an insensitive comment from a passerby who questioned, “Where was Jesus when this happened?”
The relevant authorities are actively involved in assessing the extent of the damage and investigating the root cause of the fire.
