Nigerian forward Victor Boniface will miss the upcoming African Cup of Nations (AFCON), set to commence on January 16 in Cote d’Ivoire, due to a groin injury. The Bayer Leverkusen player was unable to participate in a recent test game against Al Gharbia and the defeat to Guinea’s Syli Nationale.
Following a scan, it was revealed that Boniface would be out of action for six weeks, prompting his return to Germany for treatment. The 23-year-old expressed his support for his teammates in an Instagram post, acknowledging that he would not be part of the 34th edition of AFCON.
“Good luck guys… Wish you all the best at AFCON,” he shared on Monday. The Nigeria Football Federation is expected to announce a replacement for Boniface, who was anticipated to form a formidable partnership with Napoli star Victor Osimhen. Boniface has made an impressive impact at Bay Arena, contributing 10 goals and seven assists.
His absence adds to the challenges faced by the Nigerian team, which earlier saw midfielder Wilfred Ndidi withdraw from the tournament due to a muscle injury sidelining him for three months. Ndidi’s spot has been filled by Royal Antwerp player Alhassan Yusuf.
