President Bola Tinubu addressed the nation on Monday, recognizing the frustrations among Nigerians due to recent policy decisions taken by his administration. In his New Year message, Tinubu specifically acknowledged concerns arising from the removal of the fuel subsidy and the devaluation of the Naira.
He stated, “I am not oblivious to the expressed and sometimes unexpressed frustrations of my fellow citizens. I know for a fact that some of our compatriots are even asking if this is how our administration wants to renew their hope.”
Over the past seven months, Tinubu emphasized the necessity of making challenging decisions to prevent fiscal catastrophe. Notably, these decisions included ending the long-standing fuel subsidy, which had burdened the country financially for over four decades, and breaking the hold of a select few on the foreign exchange system, primarily benefiting the wealthy.
While acknowledging the discomfort caused by these measures to individuals, families, and businesses, Tinubu urged patience, assuring Nigerians that his administration is committed to addressing socio-economic challenges through the “Renewed Hope Agenda.”
He encouraged citizens to persevere through the challenging times, emphasizing the temporary nature of difficulties. Tinubu expressed confidence that the prevailing socio-economic challenges should inspire a renewed commitment to working collectively for the nation’s well-being.
Addressing the rising cost of living, high inflation, and unacceptable underemployment rate, Tinubu urged citizens to embrace the spirit of resilience. He emphasized the need for individuals to strive to be better citizens in the year 2024, contributing to the overall progress of the beloved nation.
On the issue of insecurity, Tinubu highlighted the administration’s efforts in rescuing captives from abductors, though acknowledging that all security problems have not been completely solved. He assured the public of ongoing efforts to ensure peace of mind in homes, workplaces, and on the roads.
Having laid the groundwork for economic recovery in 2023, Tinubu expressed readiness to expedite service delivery across various sectors in the coming year. The President concluded by calling for unity and collective efforts to overcome challenges and build a prosperous future for Nigeria.
