The Nigeria Police Force has asserted its commitment to proceed with the planned demolition of the Police Officers Wives Association (POWA) shopping complex in Ikeja, Lagos. The Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, addressed concerns and protests from affected traders, emphasizing that the complex’s reconstruction is essential due to its current state posing environmental hazards.

According to Adejobi, the decision to demolish and rebuild the complex is based on professional opinions indicating that the existing structure is an impending environmental threat, susceptible to flooding and potential collapse. The reconstruction plan will be executed in phases, with the aim of creating a modern shopping complex.

Adejobi clarified that the complex belongs to the Nigeria Police Officer’s Wives Association and is officially allocated to wives of police officers and their relatives. The decision for reconstruction has been made in good faith for the betterment of all stakeholders, considering the current environmental risks associated with the structure.

He assured that all necessary legal requirements have been met, and occupants have been given sufficient notice for evacuation. Temporary accommodations within the same complex will be provided during the reconstruction. The statement also highlighted that relevant approvals for demolition have been obtained from the Lagos State Government.

While urging Nigerians to disregard alleged wrongdoing and illegality claims, Adejobi warned traders against frivolous claims, unsubstantiated protests, and media blackmail during the demolition exercise. The initial report indicated that traders sought intervention from the state governor and the Inspector General of Police, expressing concerns over potential loss of livelihood for about 1,000 occupants if the plaza is demolished.

Despite a court order restraining the planned demolition, some individuals claiming to be officials of the Lagos State Government reportedly pasted a vacation notice at the plaza, prompting protests from the traders.
