A tragic incident unfolded at the Ezinihitte Area Command in Imo State as Corporal Cosmas Ugwu, a police officer attached to the Imo State Police Command, was fatally shot by his 23-year-old girlfriend, identified as Amanda Uchechi Ugo, a native of Ahiazu Mbaise Local Government Area.

The distressing event occurred around 6:30 pm on Boxing Day, with officers on counter duty hearing three gunshots emanating from the room occupied by Corporal Ugwu. Responding promptly, they discovered him lying in a pool of blood, having been shot three times in his chest and left hand by his girlfriend.

Corporal Ugwu was swiftly rushed to Evergreen Hospital in Ezinihitte, where, unfortunately, he was pronounced dead by the attending doctor. Sources revealed that the fatal altercation ensued during a serious fight between the deceased and his girlfriend, culminating in Ugo seizing the officer’s rifle and using it to shoot him.

The circumstances surrounding the altercation remain unclear, leaving many surprised at how the girlfriend could successfully handle a police rifle. Speculations suggest that Ugwu might have taught her the necessary skills.

The remains of the slain officer have been deposited at the Obizi mortuary, and a comprehensive investigation is ongoing. The suspect, Amanda Uchechi Ugo, is currently in police custody, undergoing interrogation, and may face possible prosecution.

Police Public Relations Officer in Imo State, Henry Okoye, confirmed the incident, expressing the police’s commitment to uncovering the facts. “Yes, the incident happened. A policeman was allegedly shot dead by his girlfriend. He was serving at Ezinihitte Mbaise. Currently, the girl involved has been arrested. We are doing everything to ensure we investigate the matter, to ascertain the fact and possibly arraign the suspect in court,” stated Okoye in a telephone conversation with PUNCH Metro.
