The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released a timetable for the upcoming bye-elections resulting from the resignation or demise of members of the National and State Houses of Assembly. INEC announced on Friday that both categories of elections are slated to occur simultaneously in all affected constituencies on Saturday, February 3, 2024.

According to the electoral body, the vacancies were declared by the Presiding Officers, including the Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Speakers of State Houses of Assembly. These vacancies span two Senatorial Districts, four Federal Constituencies, and three State Constituencies across nine states in the Federation.

The statement from INEC also highlighted the ongoing re-run elections resulting from the 2023 General Election, as directed by various Election Petition Appeal Tribunals. A total of 35 constituencies are affected by these court-ordered elections, with three covering entire constituencies and others involving only specific Polling Units.

The released statement noted, “The Timetable for the elections, along with detailed delimitation data, has been uploaded to our website and social media platforms as a guide to political parties and candidates, and for public information.”

INEC emphasized the importance of strict adherence to the specified timelines by political parties and candidates to ensure the seamless conduct of these elections.
