In a significant move towards enhancing the educational infrastructure in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Minister Nyesom Wike has given the green light for a N13.1 billion budget allocation. The funds will be utilized for the renovation, construction of toilets, and provision of furniture in primary and secondary schools across the FCT. The announcement was made by Dr. Danlami Hayyo, the mandate secretary of the Federal Capital Territory Administration Education Secretariat, during an end-of-year media briefing in Abuja on Wednesday.
Dr. Hayyo clarified that the allocated amount would be distributed among the various Councils based on their specific school project requirements. Emphasizing the commitment of Minister Wike to the timely execution of these projects, Dr. Hayyo conveyed that the projects were slated for completion in 2024.
“The minister of FCT, who has been described as Mr. Project, approves new constructions, renovations or rehabilitation, provision of furniture, and construction of toilets in FCT secondary and primary schools to the tune of over N13 billion,” stated Dr. Hayyo.
While details of the specific schools to undergo renovation or construction in each Area Council were not provided, Dr. Hayyo acknowledged the varying needs of different councils, highlighting that some have higher demands due to factors such as dilapidated structures and congested classrooms.
Dr. Hayyo also shared insights into the Education Secretariat’s training initiatives throughout the year, including staff training in London for the British Education Training Technology show, international training on innovation and entrepreneurship, training of school librarians in e-library management, computer-based test training for teachers, online training of 80 English teachers by the British Council, and training for 96 members of the School Based Management Committee, among other programs.
Addressing challenges, Dr. Hayyo encouraged the Secretariat’s staff to remain committed to achieving positive results and not be discouraged by obstacles encountered in the pursuit of educational development.
