Rivers lawmakers have proceeded with the move to impeach the Governor of the state, Siminalayi Fubara amid the raging crisis.
The unfolding crisis in the state has potentially entered a new phase, with information indicating that 24 out of the 32 lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly signed the impeachment notice against Governor Fubara.
They served impeachment notice on the Governor after impeaching and suspending House Leader Edison Ehie who is believed to be on the Governor’s side. The decisions were taken at an emergency sitting by the lawmakers on Monday morning.
Earlier today, the House of Assembly complex was mysteriously set ablaze by unidentified individuals amidst speculations that the state Governor was to face impeachment proceedings.
Following this development, the House indicated that it would forward the impeachment notice to the State Chief Judge, who will then establish a judicial panel to examine the allegations leveled against the Governor. This marks a significant step in the political turmoil gripping the state.
There are reports that Fubara has fallen apart with his predecessor and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike. However, Wike has not reacted to this development.
