Anti and pro-Ike Ekweremadu protests were staged in front of the court ahead of the proceedings at a London court on Tuesday.
Bellnewsonline.com reports that Ekweremadu, Nigeria’s former Deputy Senate President and his wife, Beatrice, appeared in court for their trial over alleged organ harvesting. However, his accused daughter, Sonia, was unable to attend as she is in the hospital.
Mr Ekweremadu, 60, appeared at the Old Bailey court wearing a grey tracksuit top, speaking only to say “Yes, miss” when asked to confirm his name.
He is accused along with his wife Beatrice, daughter Sonia and a doctor of bringing a 21-year-old man from Nigeria to have his kidney removed illegitimately.
Ekweremadu has spent 224 days in the custody of United Kingdom (UK) authorities, thus causing worry among his supporters, majority of whom are Nigerians.
Protesters gathered at the court on Tuesday to protest the continued detention of the embattled lawmaker in UK custody.
Anti- Ekweremadu demonstrators meanwhile protested the Enugu politician’s alleged continued receipt of wage as a fedeal lawmaker.
