The National Secretary of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), Peter Ameh, has alleged that the Bola Tinubu-led administration is increasingly worried about the growing political clout of Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Ameh made the claim during an interview with Seun Okinbaloye on The Micon Podcast, where he said the federal government is allegedly taking deliberate steps to ensure Obi does not appear on the ballot.

According to him, the government’s focus on Obi stems from findings gathered through what he described as “data collection and behind-closed-doors engagements,” which indicate that the Labour Party candidate remains the most formidable challenger.

Ameh also accused presidential aide, Bayo Onanuga, of repeatedly targeting Obi in his social media commentary, which he claimed forms part of a broader strategy to diminish the former Anambra governor’s influence.

He said, “We are not just running an election and just making speculation out of the blue. We also collect data and do a lot of engagement. I just came back from a journey I told you. So these are the things we do behind closed doors. And we know what is there, and we know that the only person that this government does not want to be on the ballot is Peter Obi. They are doing everything.

“Go and count how many times Bayo Onanuga has posted about Peter Obi on his on his Twitter page. He’s worried about Peter Obi. They’re worried. They don’t talk about anything without talking about Peter Obi

“Tinubu is not afraid of Atiku and Rotimi Amaechi. It’s on record; they know it. There’s a high level of fear.

“We got into democracy in 1999, the PDP did everything to defeat Bola Tinubu in Lagos, but they couldn’t. They did everything. They brought federal might. They could not.

“It took Mr Peter Obi to garner about 1 million votes, which was reduced to 500,000 votes. It took a Peter Obi to come to FCT, where there was a seat of power, to defeat the APC.”
