The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has raised fresh concerns over the state of democracy and governance in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to the party, President Bola Tinubu is using state institutions to weaken opposition voices at a time when citizens are battling economic hardship.
The accusation was made by the former National Chairman of the ADC, Ralph Nwosu, during an interview on Arise Television on Thursday.
Nwosu said the current administration is focusing more on political control than solving the problems facing ordinary Nigerians.
He warned that democracy cannot survive if government agencies are turned into tools against rival parties.
According to him, “It is time the opposition acted more. The Bola Tinubu administration is trying to use almost all institutions of government against the opposition, and that is wrong.
“The ADC and other opposition parties that we are collaborating with, we have been deliberate not to hit up the system unnecessarily.
“Hitting up the system does not privilege anybody. Our country needs to move and we have given the administration good enough notice for the country to move forward.
“Nigerian people are suffering. We have over 150 million Nigerians who cannot eat well, and those in government are playing politics.”
Furthermore, he claimed that hunger and poverty are spreading across the country while political leaders focus on power struggles instead of governance.
Nwosu stressed that opposition parties are choosing restraint because the nation needs stability, not chaos.
Moreover, the former ADC chair urged the government to prioritize food security, job creation, and economic recovery instead of targeting political rivals.
He also called on Nigerians to hold leaders accountable through lawful and democratic means.
Consequently, the remarks come amid rising public frustration over inflation, fuel prices, and the cost of basic food items. Many households, he said, are struggling to survive under current economic conditions.
